In Chapter 1, students are introduced to the concept of our built-in moral compass: the fitrah, its power, and its inherent limitations.

This lesson introduces students to the concept of the fitrah, our inner moral compass. Students will first acknowledge that humans are naturally inclined towards good acts. Then they will examine how this inner compass can be weakened or overshadowed by personal biases, emotions, or limited understanding of complex situations. By the end of the lesson, students will conclude that while fitrah pushes them toward goodness, it is insufficient for consistently making the best moral decisions, paving the way for Lesson 2 on the necessity of revelation to help guide the fitrah.

Fitrah: Our inner compass

Building on Lesson 1’s discussion of fitrah and its limitations, Lesson 2 highlights how the Qur’an and Sunnah supplies the fitrah with clarity and guidance. Students will learn that revelation guides both the individual (refining personal traits) and society (affirming good customs and eliminating harmful ones). By the end of this lesson, students will be able to connect how the Qur’an and Sunnah guide moral behavior and fill in the gaps fitrah cannot. In chapter 2, we will build on this by providing concrete examples of how the Qur’an and Sunnah guide us.

Chapter 1: Our built-in moral compass

Chapter 2 expands on the necessity of revelation and how the Qur’an and Sunnah guide the fitrah on an individual and societal level.

Students will learn how the Qur’an and Sunnah act as “guiding lights” that clear the fog when fitrah (our God-given moral compass) is challenged by real-life interferences. After reviewing fitrah and its obstacles, the class explores a traffic light metaphor to see how revelation directs choices when situations are complex. Using hands-on activities, students will practice applying their fitrah alongside divine guidance to solve real-life school scenarios. Then, they will share and discuss how individual guidance scales to community behavior. By the end, students can describe the role of Qur’an and Sunnah in guiding fitrah and apply that guidance to become better individuals.

Lesson 1 

Our guiding lights 

In this lesson, students will connect admired character traits to four core qualities: self-discipline, seeking guidance, seeking justice, and courage. Then, they will anchor each one to specific, revealed sources. After building a class &#8220;Glow wall&#8221; of admirable qualities, they will pair the qualities with Qur’anic verses. This exercise will show them how revelation strengthens their fitrah for effective action in social situations. By the end of the lesson, learners can explain how the Qur’an and Sunnah shape inner character and identify one core quality they will intentionally practice.

Lesson 2 

Glowing through the Qur'an and Sunnah

Students explore how the Qur’an and Sunnah inspire character growth by studying four historical figures before and after Islam. In groups, they analyze a short biography, discover a pre-Islam glow, and link a post-Islam “glow-up” to an ayah/hadith. Students will then create personal Character Cards with strengths, guiding verses, and practical growth plans.

Lesson 3

Glow-up: transformative journeys in Islam

In the final lesson of Chapter 2, students move beyond the individual and focus on cultural practices. They will learn to evaluate common social practices through a simple traffic light metaphor to highlight how and when revelation stops, slows down, or continues certain cultural practices. This lesson highlights the need for revelation going beyond the individual to guide societies.

Chapter 2: Qur’an and Sunnah guide the way

Chapter 3 examines the role of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as the ultimate ethical role model, illustrating how to achieve moral excellence in our daily lives through his example.

Students will explore ihsan, doing one’s very best with sincere intention for Allah, then practice applying it to real-life. A quick demonstration will show students that people try harder when they&#8217;re being watched. This leads them to redefine excellence not as chasing grades or approval, but as ikhlas (sincerity), acting because Allah always sees them. Finally, through analyzing real-life scenarios, students will learn to apply this concept of ihsan to common middle-school situations like bullying, chores, and study habits, drawing inspiration from the Prophet&#8217;s ﷺ perfect modeling of ihsan in ordinary moments.

Ihsan: Doing your very best

Moving from concept to practice, students will learn to integrate ihsan into their lives. Following a brief review of the concept and how it helps us achieve Allah’s love and support, the class is introduced to the 4 R’s, a simple four-step toolkit for cultivating excellence: Remember (Allah is present), Reset (renew sincere intention), Refine (raise quality), and Reflect (self-check).
Students observe ihsan being modeled through real-life examples, then take the Ihsan Challenge. Each student chooses an area of their life (worship, family, school, etc.), commits to applying the 4 R’s for two weeks, and seals their written pledge in a classroom Time Capsule. This final activity makes the unit’s core concepts, fitrah, Qur’anic guidance, and the Prophet&#8217;s example a practical, repeatable routine for achieving moral excellence in their own lives.

Chapter 3: Achieving moral excellence through ihsan

Can people be good without God’s guidance? Without religion?

While we are all born with a natural pull towards good, called the fitrah, that feeling alone is not enough to have a consistent moral framework.

This curriculum unit is designed for students ages 11-13 to explore why God’s revelation (guidance from the Qur’an and Sunnah) is absolutely essential to having strong, consistent morals. It helps us:
