9/11 Anniversary: Who Taught You To Hate? | Khutbah by Dr. Omar Suleiman

Six months after 9/11, 25% of Americans said Islam encourages violence more than other religions. 25 years later, that number is 51%.

The hostility did not fade with time. It grew. And it grew in a country where Muslims buried their own dead from that day, where Muslim first responders ran toward the towers, and where a generation has now spent its entire life answering for a crime committed by 19 strangers.

On the 25th anniversary of September 11th, Sh. Omar Suleiman takes the question America asked in 2001 and turns it in the other direction. Why do they hate us? Who taught you to hate?

This khutbah sits with collective blame and what the Qur'an says about it. Allah tells us that no soul carries the burden of another (Surah al-An'am, 6:164). He commands justice even toward people who despise us: “Do not let the hatred of a people lead you away from justice. Be just. That is closer to taqwa.” (Surah al-Ma'idah, 5:8).

For Muslims who have never known an America before the Patriot Act, the watchlist, and the secondary screening line at the airport, this is a khutbah about where the hate actually came from, who has profited from keeping it alive, and why the enemy you were handed may not be your enemy at all.

00:00Dear brothers and sisters, as we land on the 25th anniversary of 9-11, there was a lot that I wanted to talk about, and there were many different angles in which I could take this khutbah.
00:14And obviously we could talk about the pain felt on that day, and the innocent lives that were taken, or we could talk about the pain felt for years after until this day, and the innocent lives that continue to be taken in its name.
00:28And there are so many different ways in which we could start to process what has happened over the last 25 years. And it was a reflection that I had two years ago that the entire sirah of the Prophet ﷺ,
00:42from the time he received prophethood until his last day ﷺ, was encompassed by that same span of 23 years, which really gives you perspective, because for so many of us, we remember that day so fresh,
00:56and we remember what the years felt like after, and we remember what it felt like before, and the changes that we saw in society. And we also understand that Islamophobia today is worse in America than it was in the days after 9-11,
01:10in the immediate year after 9-11, because there's a whole industry that has taken that hate, that anger, that grief, that pain, and turned it into something that it never should have been,
01:24which is an excuse to inflict pain on so many people, not just in America, but beyond. I could have spoken about some of the Muslims that passed away on that day.
01:36But I wanted to focus on something that's broader, in terms of a concept that we could take in our everyday lives, and think about what framing the religion gives us to deal with the very real grief, and the very real anger,
01:50and the very real hate that we might sometimes feel. And I wanted to start, actually, with one of the victims today, who some of you might have seen, said something so noble. You had different, obviously, family members that were coming up to the podium,
02:04that were talking about their pain. Some of them brought up the whole radical Islamic terror, and we have to confront it. You clearly had some partisan elements that were there. And then you had this speaker who said,
02:17My father, Michael Massaroli, you do my dad's legacy, and the legacy of all these victims, no honor by using this tragedy to spread hate. We have seen a medley of people come up today,
02:30of all races, all religions, all creeds, and this tragedy is just that. It's a tragedy. I've had to grow up and spend the past 25 years seeing people use it to hate on our Muslim brothers and sisters,
02:44to hate on people who don't look like them. That's wrong. That does no honor to the victims here. Please stop. What a noble thing to say. What a noble thing to do. May Allah ﷻ grant him comfort and hidayah.
02:58Allahumma ameen. Beautiful. And if only everyone processed it that way. But there's something to pay attention to. What manufactured the hate, and then what comes out of that hate?
03:12I remember one of the earliest documentaries that I came to know about when I was studying the history of Islam in America was the 1959 documentary, "The Hate That Hate Produced," about the Nation of Islam.
03:23And for many, that was how Malcolm X was introduced to America. The hate that hate produced. And I wanted to look at this from the Qur'an. The Qur'an doesn't speak about hate in simplistic terms.
03:36The Qur'an talks about what produces hate, how you deal with it when you have genuine hate, how you direct it towards those that are responsible with proportionality. Okay?
03:50Now, I'm not even getting into what's really behind 9-11 and, you know, who are some of the actors that were involved. No, I'm just talking about hate that is felt, hate that is produced, hate that is directed.
04:03And I wanted to categorize hate in a way that we can take it into our own lives and we can think about not just the context that we live in, the social context that we live in, but how we deal with our situations as a whole. And it starts with a governing ayah.
04:18And as the ulama mentioned, this is the most decisive ayah in the Qur'an about justice where Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says,
O believers, stand firm for Allah and bear true testimony.
04:42And do not let the hatred of a people cause you to swerve away from justice. Be just; that is closer to righteousness. See, Allah 'azza wa jal did not deny that people have hatred in the first place. Shana'an qawm. You might hate someone,
04:57but be just and direct that hatred properly. So Allah 'azza wa jal teaches us how to discipline that hatred. So the first category I want us to think about in terms of hate is misplaced hate.
05:10That's when the hate is real because the pain is real, but it's misplaced. It finds the wrong victim. And sometimes when we are angry, sometimes when we have grief that we can't come to terms with,
05:23we need to find someone to take it out on. And I want to take you to a story that subhanAllah, I had hesitated to bring the story up in the first capacity of talking about other companions a few times because it's not a very nice story, but it is instructive.
05:38When we talk about the murder of Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, can you imagine the pain that was felt by the assassination of Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him? And there are so many dimensions to this.
05:50The first khalifah that's assassinated, he's killed leading salah in the masjid of the Prophet ﷺ, so all sanctity goes out the window. And the person that killed him
06:02gave Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, a pretty thinly veiled threat a few days before. And Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, was told, why don't you go ahead and take care of him? And Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, did not want to be unjust,
06:17not on the basis of just the statement, right? Perhaps he's being misinterpreted, perhaps he doesn't mean it this way, but whatever it is, Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, holds himself accountable to justice. The man who carries out the crime is a Persian non-Muslim
06:31in a land predominantly of Arab Muslims. And he kills Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, and you can imagine the anger, And he kills Umar رضي الله تعالى عنه
06:45and you can imagine the anger, the pain that is felt by the entire Ummah, the weight of Umar رضي الله عنه's blood. And you can imagine the pain of his children. Now when we talk about his children,
06:58we think of the most noble of the children of Umar رضي الله عنه and Umar رضي الله عنه's nobility transferred, especially to his son Abdullah ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما.
07:11Abdullah ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما and the children of Umar رضي الله عنه dealt with this the way that the Sunnah teaches them to deal with this. They didn't go as a community and find every Persian and deal with every Persian that way. They didn't assign collective guilt
07:25to every Persian non-Muslim freed slave. They didn't expel all of the mawali from Medina's territory. They convened a shura. They dealt with it properly in that sense.
07:37But one of the children of Umar رضي الله عنه did not deal with things properly. And he's someone you don't hear of. His name is Ubaidullah ibn Umar. Ubaidullah means the younger, the little Abdullah.
07:49So he's not a Sahabi, he's a Tabi'i. He was a little child when the Prophet ﷺ passed away. And he grew up amongst the Sahaba. But he himself is classified from the Tabi'in. And Ubaidullah was enraged
08:04about the death of his father as he should be. But what did he do? He heard that there were some people that were speaking with Abu Lu'lu al-Majusi before he committed the crime.
08:15That Abu Lu'lu al-Majusi was in conversation with Hormuzan and a Christian Persian named Juhaina. And that they probably had something to do with the murder of Umar رضي الله عنه. And he was so angry
08:29that before they could even form a shura, before the shura could appoint a Khalifah, before the system could come into place, he took matters into his own hand. And he went out and he killed Hormuzan.
08:42And he killed Juhaina. Sa'd رضي الله عنه apprehended him and tried to stop him after that. And feeling the pain that was caused to him because his father was killed by Abu Lu'lu al-Majusi,
08:56he killed Abu Lu'lu al-Majusi's daughter as well in this fit of rage. And it was dark. It was tragic. And not Islamic. And not the way that we're taught
09:10to deal with things as Muslims. No one would say that his pain was not real. But he did not use that pain properly. The pain led to misplaced hate. He went after the wrong people.
09:23What crime did the daughter of Abu Lu'lu al-Majusi commit? But you can understand it, not justify it, what was going on in his mind. How the Shaitan can play with a person in real grief and say, hey, this was done to you.
09:37Go inflict the same amount of pain on the closest thing to it because you can't kill Abu Lu'lu al-Majusi because he's already gone. You can't kill the murderer of your father. He's gone. It's understandable, but it's not justifiable.
09:51And so misplaced hate is when you take real pain, but you channel it in the wrong direction. So Ubaidullah had every reason to be angry, but at the same time,
10:04that anger over the innocent blood of none other than al-Faruq, Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه, does not diminish the innocence of someone else's blood no matter who they are. You don't get to go and take matters into your own hand. You don't get to go find a substitute
10:19for your father's killer just because you need the closest thing to feel like your grief has been remedied. And so Islam understands the wound. Allah عز و جل understands the wound, but at the same time,
10:31not the right to act upon that hate in a way that's wrong. And that's why the Sahaba dealt with this properly. And this became a lesson in our Islamic textbooks that even the blood of Umar ibn al-Khattab
10:43رضي الله عنه does not justify this. Right? Now you think about what this place looks like in our context. You think about how every single Muslim becomes guilty. Right? If you took the narrative at its face value.
10:57You think about how every Sikh had to worry because they looked Muslim. And you think about someone who felt real pain, someone who actually lost relatives on that day, or lost someone that was a friend or felt real pain, genuine pain,
11:11over that tragedy and decides to take it out on someone else. And you could then analogize that to every other conflict and every other genocide and every other war and every other tragedy,
11:24even if it's on a greater scale around the world. A child anywhere could feel that not only do I want to get my father's killer, my mother's killer, but that hate gets transferred somewhere else.
11:38And Allah عز و جل teaches us to discipline that hate. So that's the first thing. Hatred that gets misplaced. And Allah عز و جل teaches us to allow that hatred or allow that grief to sit, but then to deal
11:51with it properly. Now the second category is when hatred is intensified towards the actual offender. And there's an understandable component of that too. And this is when you have the aggressor in front of you and you are not taught that you have to
12:05let go of the hatred that you feel towards them. In fact, when Allah عز و جل speaks, Allah is acknowledging that you feel that inside of you towards that person. Yes, we praise the example of the Prophet ﷺ In fact, when Allah عز و جل says, Allah is acknowledging that you
12:19feel that inside of you towards that person. Yes, we praise the example of the Prophet ﷺ and how he dealt with those that repented. Those that repented and redeemed themselves. But I'm talking about when you have an unrepentant
12:33killer, when you have an unrepentant aggressor. How do you deal with it? And we look at the example of Sayyidina Bilal رضي الله تعالى عنه on the day of the Battle of Badr. Can you imagine Bilal رضي الله تعالى عنه when he saw Umayyah?
12:47Umayyah who tortured him. Umayyah who spit on him. Umayyah who dragged him through the streets of Mecca. Umayyah who whipped him. Umayyah who starved him. Umayyah who had the stone placed on him. Umayyah who when Bilal رضي الله تعالى عنه was
13:01purchased or his freedom was purchased by Abu Bakr al-Siddiq رضي الله تعالى عنه said, "I would have given him away for a coin." He's nothing. I mean it's not just the physical torture and torment, it's the humiliation. Can you imagine the emotion when Bilal رضي الله تعالى عنه saw him?
13:15And so what happened on the day of Badr? Umayyah technically at the end of the battle, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf رضي الله تعالى عنه had captured him. But when Bilal رضي الله تعالى عنه saw him, he couldn't hold himself. لا رَجَوْتُ إِن نَجَا
13:29"I will not survive if he survives." One of us has to go. And Bilal رضي الله تعالى عنه killed him. And the Prophet ﷺ did not punish him. It was justified. It was an unrepentant aggressor. Yes, when you
13:43look at the moments and the minutes, this was not something that happened in the midst of the heat of the battle. But there was a hatred and an anger and the Prophet ﷺ did not punish him and the Prophet ﷺ did not condemn him. That intensity was human
13:57and no one could go to Bilal رضي الله تعالى عنه and say that your hate, you have to let it go. That your hate is unjust. No, it's justified. So there's hate that's misplaced and there's hate that's intensified. And then there's a third category
14:11where you have manufactured hate. And this is when you don't have someone who actually feels pain. You don't have someone that actually has a legitimate grievance. But you have someone
14:25who sees an opportunity to manufacture hate for their own political mobility. To score cheap political points. And so what they do is they look at who actually has the pain
14:39and then they feed it propaganda to channel that pain into hatred toward the wrong people. They monetize that hate. They market that hate. They use that hate shamelessly
14:53to cover for their own crimes against other innocent people. They do not care about how they weaponize that hate. They do not care what the consequences are. And that type of hatred is the type of hatred that you keep on hearing
15:07out of your Texas politicians. That type of manufactured hate, that opportunism, that's not the language of someone who actually cares about the victims of 9/11 or the victims of anybody else. But who is looking to create scapegoats and to hurt, and that is the most satanic type of
15:21hate. That's the most shaytani. The most base type of hate. Where you don't take something that happened to you but you take something that happened to someone else and you use it to cause
15:35misery to someone else as well, all for your own benefit. That type of hate is cheap. That type of hate has an industry behind it. That type of hate has a growing infrastructure behind it. And as people of conscience, we have to stand up
15:49to that type of hate and we have to do two things. Number one, stop the propaganda machines. Stand up to the propaganda machines. Try to make sure that we have a counter narrative. Number two, penalize that type of hate
16:03politically because it's being used for cheap political points, so we have to penalize that type of hate politically as well. Because you're not going to be able to speak to the people that are in pain that are being taken advantage of without
16:17addressing the venom that's coming out of those that are taking advantage of them. And that takes a strategy. And then there's a fourth category of hate. And this is inherited hate. And it's really, you know, it's crazy
16:31when you're speaking to someone and you're talking about do you remember 9/11 and then you realize you're talking to a 20-year-old? Right? Or are you talking to someone who's 26 or 27? Like, "No, I was two." And you realize that there's a whole generation that doesn't remember
16:45this. They woke up to a post-9/11 world and they woke up to a world in which the devices and the infrastructure and the institutionalization of Islamophobia has already come to fruition and they've just accepted this as normal.
16:59But you know what's happening on the other side? That there are also children who don't know us. Children who don't know Islam that grow up inheriting hate. That are miseducated on purpose
17:13before they actually get to experience Islam or experience hate. That are miseducated on purpose before they actually get to experience Islam or experience a Muslim. And when
17:27you think about what the Texas public school system is now going to feed millions of children in terms of manufactured hate, that's not something that we just sit by and hope that the children are able to use their proper discernment
17:41with. That type of inherited hate is exactly what the Prophet ﷺ was talking about when he was in Ta'if and he was being stoned, and he said, "Perhaps their children will be different." And when he said, "O Allah,
17:55forgive my people, they don't know any better." Some of the scholars mentioned those who were in the second part of the chain of the isnad of hatred of the Prophet ﷺ. They didn't even know the Prophet ﷺ. They were being driven out
18:09in the battlefield because that's what they were told. That's what they were told. And that's where we have to actually come up with a strategy to make sure that hate is not inherited at the scale
18:23that we do a better job of trying to put more ethical people in the places where these decisions are being made and we also do a better job of getting our own education out there and making sure that other people experience
18:37us and experience Islam in a proper way. The angrier people get, the more desperate people get, the more grief that they have over their inability to pay bills, over whatever
18:51it may be, there's going to be a person or a group of people that they look for to direct their anger towards. And the irony is that those who have already taken over their governments and those that have already taken over their policy and those that have already bought their
19:05elections and those that are actually behind their pain and their misery will try to redirect them towards a group of people that cannot do any of those things whatsoever. Try to redirect that pain, try to redirect that hate. So what do we do?
19:19And I want to end with this note, with these categories of pain. What do we do with these categories of hate, with misplaced hate? When it comes to misplaced hate, then we hold ourselves and we hold everybody else to a principle. That misplaced
19:33hate means pain is real, but that doesn't mean that you get to redirect it to anybody else, and just because you can't take your anger out on a government or you can't take your anger out on this group of people or that group of people or even the immediate aggressor, doesn't mean that you get to take it out on the closest thing
19:47possible. Absolutely not. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala mentions that no one carries the burden of anybody else. No one carries anybody else's burden of guilt. Everybody is an individual. When it comes to hate intensifying,
20:01then we have to make sure that we govern our anger towards something that's productive. Do you hate what happened in Gaza? I do. Do you hate what happened in Iraq? Do you hate what happened in Afghanistan? Do you hate what happens
20:15to innocent people, whether they're here or there? Yes. So how do you take that intensity and direct it towards something that is productive? When it comes to manufactured hate, then we need to make sure that we call it out
20:29and that we come up with the machinery to challenge that machinery. And when it comes to inherited hate, then we need to get our own education, our own experience that's out there. And so over the last 25 years, you have some Muslims that would say, "Look, we just need to do a better job at being good neighbors.
20:43We just need to take flowers to people. We just need to make sure that we smile at people more. We just need to make sure that we're great coworkers, great colleagues. We need to produce doctor after doctor after doctor after doctor. And eventually,
20:57if you have enough Muslim doctors, everyone's going to get sick at some point in America, then Islamophobia will naturally go away." It's not exactly true. Why? Because there's machinery that's teaching people to not trust your smile, to not
21:11trust your kind treatment. And in fact, they even gave it a name: taqiyyah, which most Muslims didn't even know. Right? And convince you that this is all part of a takeover. But does that mean that you shouldn't do all of those things? You absolutely
21:25should do all of those things, because you are a Muslim. Does that mean that there aren't going to be times that that actually leads to someone changing their heart and mind about Islam? No, it actually will.
21:39It might work, and it will work with some people, that their hearts will change. That they will see the authenticity of the experience with that Muslim. So, when you think about kind treatment, how Muslims should act,
21:53and when you think about proper strategy of education, of narrative, or political strategy, it's not this or that. We would be naïve to think that if we're just better Muslims that this all goes away. That's naïveté. But we would also
22:07be wrong to think that that's not part of the process, not just of changing the public, but of interacting with the public in a way that the Prophet ﷺ taught us to do, because that's who we are. Whether they trust it or not, that's a different
22:21story. But that's who we are, and that's who we're supposed to be in the first place. We show strength, we show kindness, we stand for justice, and we stand for peace. We show mercy, and we stand up to cruelty. That's who we are as Muslims. And no
22:35incident can ever change that permanent disposition. We ask Allah to direct our efforts towards that which is pleasing to Him, towards that which will preserve and protect, and towards that which will be closer towards taqwa, closer towards piety.
22:49We ask Allah to direct our hearts, to direct our minds, to direct our deeds towards that which is most pleasing to Him. And we ask Allah to forgive us for our shortcomings, in regards to all of those whose lives are
23:03innocently taken, in regards to all of our shuhada, whether in Palestine or Iraq, or wherever it may be. May Allah have mercy on them all. Allahumma amin. Aqulu qawli hadha wa-astaghfiru Allah li wa lakum wa rasulahu al-muslimin fa-astaghfiru innahu al-Ghafur al-Rahim
